We all know that when it comes to a red carpet look, hair and makeup play a big part. So big, in fact, that these elements can literally make or break an outfit. At last night’s 2016 Oscars, we saw plenty of stunning beauty looks that were the perfect complements to the beautiful gowns we saw on the red carpet (think pretty metallic shadows, bold, berry lips and lots of gorgeous, wavy hairstyles). But the most popular look of the night was matching the makeup to the dress, as demonstrated by Rachel McAdams, Olivia Munn and more.

Saorise Ronan‘s grey eyes really popped thanks to her dark smoky shadow and thin black liner. We love how she kept the rest of her face neutral, to make her peepers the standout.
Jennifer Lawrence
While we weren’t really fans of JLaw’s Dior gown, we did love her hair and makuep. Her blond lob was styled to perfection and that bronze shadow worked nicely with the hues of her dress.
Naomi Watts
We’re obsessed with Naomi’s bold, berry lip, but what we love best about her beauty look is that wavy asymmetrical lob.
Olivia Munn
Olivia Munn went matchy-matchy, opting for a lip colour in the same hue as her Stella McCartney gown. And it was a smart choice — the orange picks up the orange tones in her eyes quite nicely.
Margot Robbie
While not over-the-top, Margot Robbie’s beauty looks is still very effective. We appreciate that she didn’t go overboard on her eyes or lips, but rather kept things neutral with a bit of liner, a nude lipstick and well-groomed brows. Also that textured wave? Perfection.
Charlize Theron
It may not look like much, but if you look closely, Charlize’s eyes are lined with a metallic red shadow, to go with her gown. Love.
Rachel McAdams
Also matching her makeup to her gown was Rachel McAdams who rocked a metallic green liner below her eyes. We say this will be the big makeup trend for 2016.
