Lakme Fashion Week ties up Indian Fashion

Lakme Fashion Week (LFW) has entered into a strategic collaboration with fashion trade portal Fashion and you as part of its push to further the business of fashion by using e-commerce. The portal has created a special “Launch My Line” space to promote designers from the Gen Next and Emerging sections of the upcoming Winter/Festive 2010 edition of LFW (September 17-21).  It will also host targeted sales events to promote all LFW designers. Gen Next features interesting new designers at the start of their careers, while Emerging shows designers who have been in the business for around 4-5 years.

Fashion And You is a private shopping club that features top international and Indian designers and runs limited-time sales offering discounts of up to 80 percent off retail prices. Membership is by invitation only but is free and open to global consumers. Other highlights of the Winter/Festive 2010 edition of LFW include the Gen Next 5 show, which marks the five-year anniversary of Gen Next. The show will feature ten previous Gen Next designers including Aneeth Arora, Anuj Sharma and Kallol Datta.

The event will also feature leading Indian designers Manish Arora and Ritu Kumar, marking the first time they’ve appeared on the LFW runway. Malini Ramani will present the Lakme Grand Finale with the theme “Gypsy Collection,” which is influenced by her travels around the globe. LFW, which takes place at the Grand Hyatt in Mumbai, and the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week in New Delhi are the two major fashion shows in India.
In case anyone is wondering what “that time” is, it’s time for Lakme Fashion Week’s (LFW) new season and this year it is Winter/Festive 2010; a sensible title because Fall and Autumn sound a bit pretentious in a country where for the majority of the year it is sweltering hot with the mercury soaring northwards. This season is going to be a glittering one. Designerz Central looking forward to viewing the collections of 74 designers with 69 on the ramp.  Going off the beaten track we can’t wait to see Narendra Kumar’s off-site show at Tote which celebrates its first anniversary on September 16. One of the highlights is the “Five Years of Gen Next” where the Top Ten young stars in the business who started out from the ramps of LFW will be showing The Best of Their Best creations. What a great idea from LFW! Two seasons ago it was the “Ten Years of LFW” that brought together 20 Grand Finale designers and the stunning Naomi Campbell on one ramp.

There are heavy weight names on the programme which will surely see a house full – Manish Arora showing his A/W 2010-11 creations which got rave reviews in Paris in March 2010. It’s a futuristic Art Deco line with the most outrageous psychedelic colours and wigs. The queen of ethnic couture, Ritu Kumar debuts with her Label, a prêt line at LFW and Bollywood biggies, Manish Malhotra and Neeta Lulla will have stars of the silver screen in the front row and on the ramp. The grand finale with Malini Ramani’s global collection will take me on a nostalgic world tour. The 12 emerging, 9 Gen Next and 8 Accessory designers are also all set to shake the fashion world during the coming season.
We all love the excitement, glitz and glamour of LFW. What will the trends for the new season be? Will skirts hit unimaginable heights or skim the floor? Will bridal wear out shine sexy siren gowns or will there be a fashionable battle between ethnic and western wear? The Red Carpet divas, the front row frenzy, the spotting of celebs, who’s wearing what from which label and who’s with whom? Will the front row be jammed with Bollywood super stars? When will the buyers and media put pen to paper – the former to order and the latter to report? It’s such a nail biting high octane event.

A new ad featuring the glamour queen Raveena Tandon for the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has just been launched before the Lakme Fashion Week. The ad is made for the promotion of not using animal skin as a part of your style statement. The reason for doing the ad is to tell the consumers the torture these reptiles go through before their skin is converted to shoes, bags, jackets and other exotic products. The process of using the skin is very cunning where the mutilated bodies of these animals are discarded or crammed into some corner or even sometimes beaten to death.

In the ad we see Raveena wearing a skinny outfit that is similar to a snakeskin while she is lying in a blood. The words written under the picture are “Wearing Exotic Skins Kills. Leave Wildlife Out of Your Wardrobe”. The outfit which she was wearing was designed by Karishma Trehan and the ad was shot by Avinash Gowarikar.
