CHANEL has defended its decision to incorporate traditional Native American headdresses in its recent Metiers d’Art autumn/winter 2013 collection, after the pieces were met with mixed reviews.

"The Chanel Paris-Dallas Metiers d’Art 2013 collection is a celebration of the beauty of Texas. Native Americans are an integral part of Texas’s rich history and culture and the feather headdress, a symbol of strength and bravery, is one of the most visually stunning examples of creativity and craftsmanship," a Chanel spokesperson told Fashionista. "We deeply apologise if it has been misinterpreted or is seen as offensive as it was really meant to be a tribute to the beauty of craftsmanship."

Victoria’s Secret and H&M came under fire for imitating Native American dress earlier this year, with both brands having been forced to pull the offending headdresses.
