Gucci, Versace and Prada were among the big names presenting their Spring/Summer 2013 menswear collections during Milan Menswear Fashion Week June 23-26, with Roman gladiators and British dandies offering a source of style inspiration for key emerging trends.

Sportswear

Wrestling was a key influence at the Versace Spring/Summer 2013 presentation, with male models taking to the runway in skimpy trunks and briefs underneath satin robes held in place with ornate wrestling belts. The sportswear aesthetic continued at labels including Diesel Black Gold, Salvatore Ferragamo, Dirk Bikkembergs and Dolce & Gabbana too, where high-waist shorts with retro bathing suit details were a highlight.

Color blocking

From head-to-toe green and cobalt suits at Gucci to yellow knits at Missoni and lime green pants at Burberry, there was an explosion of color at Milan Menswear Fashion Week, setting the tone for a dazzling Spring/Summer 2013 menswear season. Salvatore Ferragamo and Etro also embraced vivid shades, while cardigans and matching sweaters at Jil Sander featured geometric color block detailing and Prada offered color block shirts in maroon and green with matching loafers.

Shine on

While neutral linens, soft knits and classic plaid all still had their place during the menswear shows, a flashier style was noted via the dominance of satin and sparking crystals on the Milan runway. At Roberto Cavalli, jackets paved with sparkling crystals stole the show, while models at shows including Versace and Calvin Klein shimmered in satin creations. The latter showcased pleated pants with elegant satin waistbands, while highlights at John Varvatos included satin pants with tuxedo stripes.

Bedtime

Finally, last season’s pajama trend is here to stay for Spring/Summer 2013, with Moschino sending male models down the runway in baggy trousers and suits made using striped pink and blue cotton pajama fabric. Other designers to embrace nighttime fashion include Etro, where models evoked the 19th century British dandy by donning silky dressing gown-inspired overcoats, baggy trousers and floaty tunic tops.
