Iman was born as a subsidiary of China Robinson and basketball coach George "Tic" Price. Her mother is African-American-Korean and her father African-American descent. She grew up in Culver City, California and attended Fairfax High School in Los Angeles.

She also did advertising for Bottega Veneta, GAP, Blumarine, Burberry, Christian Dior, Donna Karan, Gucci, , Victoria's Secret and United Colors of Benetton.
In the May 2007 issue of U.S. Vogue she was featured with Doutzen Kroes, Caroline Trentini, Raquel Zimmermann, Sasha Pivovarova, Agyness Deyn, Coco Rocha, Jessica Stam, Lily Donaldson and Hilary Rhoda on the cover, as a new group of supermodels.
Since 21 Iman moderated in March 2009 with Israeli supermodel Bar Refaeli, the MTV series "House of Style", which in 1989 went for the first time on the air.
