Women can get the golden glow that they want from a tanning bed without having to wait for the perfect day to do it. Two different kinds of rays are used by tanning beds: UVB and UVA. Both are absorbed by the skin, but in different ways. The UVA rays have long wavelengths that penetrate into the deepest layers of the skin, whereas UVB rays’ have short wavelengths that only reach the surface layers of skin. Both types of rays are major contributors in the health risks associated with excessive sun exposure, such as the risk of developing skin cancers. UVB rays, however, also trigger the synthesis of the vitamin D precursor in the skin, and thus are solely responsible for the healthy benefits of sunshine. The old tanning beds were made with UVB rays being used for tanning but the newer ones use the UVA rays which can cause skin cancer. One study indicates that people who use tanning beds at least once were two-and-a-half times more likely to develop squamous cell skin cancer, and one-and-a-half times more likely to develop basal cell skin cancer. The people who use Tanning bed are at an increased risk of melanoma too, the deadliest form of skin cancer.
