Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have been slammed for using their royal titles and many believe they are heading toward a tipping point.
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry announced in January 2020 that they were stepping back from their royal duties. For over a year, they have been living in California. However, the couple still use their royal title Duke and Duchess of Sussex which raised many eyebrows.
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry still hold their royal titles. Queen Elizabeth II bestowed them the Duke and Duchess of Sussex title on their wedding day. They still hold their HRH titles, but the Queen forbid them from using them after they stepped down from their royal duties. But they can still use their peerage title — the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
However, most of the people do not want them to use any of their royal titles because they are already in the U.S. Also, they do not represent the royal family anymore. The Sussex critics do not want Prince Harry and Markle to associate themselves with the British royals.
So, when Markle signed her letter about paid leave with “Duchess of Sussex” several disapproved of it. Things got worse when she cold-called U.S. senators to campaign for the paid parental leave and introduced herself as “Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex.”
According to Lorraine Kelly, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex may reach a “tipping point” where they may need to give up their royal titles in the future, Express reported.
Russell Myers, the royal editor for I, joined Lorraine and they talked about Markle using her title for lobbying work. Lorraine said she understood what the duchess was saying.
Myers said it was an issue that Markle continued to use her royal title when she reached out to senators and introduce herself as the duchess.
After Markle’s paid leave letter was published, several netizens urged the Queen to just remove her and Prince Harry’s royal titles. Apparently, they didn’t like it whenever the couple use their titles.
Constitutional expert Iain MacMarthanne said royals are expected to be politically neutral. Meanwhile, some netizens said Markle should not use her title because it defeats the purpose. Every time she uses it for a campaign, the public talks about her title and why she should not use it instead of the subject she is promoting.
