The baby, expected this summer, arrives as Andrew and Ferguson face one of the most turbulent chapters of their lives. King Charles stripped Andrew of his royal titles late last year following renewed scrutiny of the former prince’s ties to the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Ferguson simultaneously lost her Duchess of York title and was stripped of the Freedom of the City of York honour over her own association with Epstein.
Against that bleak backdrop, royal commentators say the news of Eugenie’s pregnancy — announced on Instagram — has offered something the couple has been sorely lacking: cause for celebration.
“This is joyous news for the couple at a time when the debauchery, deceit and disgusting behavior of her father have loomed large over their lives,” British royal expert Hilary Fordwich told Fox News Digital.
Royal broadcaster Ian Pelham Turner echoed that sentiment, describing the announcement as a significant relief. “At last, some wonderful news for Eugenie and her husband, Jack Brooksbank, as it has been announced that she is expecting a third child,” he said, calling it “tremendous news” for the former Duke and Duchess of York.
Turner noted that Andrew and Ferguson have always been deeply devoted to family life. “They are both totally besotted with their children and grandchildren and have spent many hours having family get-togethers,” he said.
He added that the joy of a new grandchild could provide meaningful relief for a couple who have endured months of sustained public and institutional pressure. “Whatever the public think of Andrew and Sarah, the amount of mental health stress they have gone through, albeit brought on themselves, to have something joyful to celebrate, may give the entire royal family a boost too.”
Turner also speculated about the couple’s future living arrangements, suggesting neither may settle permanently in the UK. “My feeling is that Andrew will not really settle in Sandringham, and Sarah is obviously looking for an escape route after her latest hiding place was discovered, so I have a suspicion both might end up in Portugal to be close to their grandchildren and lead a simpler, quieter life.”
Not all experts, however, see the pregnancy as straightforwardly positive for the Yorks’ public standing. Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams welcomed the news for Eugenie personally but cautioned that it would inevitably bring renewed attention to her parents.
“This is very happy news for Eugenie, and we must wish her and Jack Brooksbank well. The way she revealed it on Instagram was delightful,” he said. “However, inevitably, it means that attention will return to the Yorks.”
Fitzwilliams pointed to the christening of Princess Beatrice’s daughter Athena last December, when Andrew and Ferguson deliberately kept a low profile. He expects the same careful choreography around the new arrival — though he doubts it will shield them from scrutiny. “Unfortunately, the press coverage will be relentless,” he said.
