She has made the transition in tandem with a social media presence which put her at the top of the Instagram tree as her breathy beat-laden pop climbed the charts. And then there was the clutter of celebrity chaos in the wake of her relationship with Justin Bieber which she laments has stolen focus from her musical endeavours.

But after all the single downloads and social updates, the true test of any music artist is ‘the show’. After one cancelled tour, she finally performed in Sydney at the Qudos Bank Arena, Sydney Olympic Park, on Tuesday. She excels at costuming; Selena rocks those sparkly, slinky outfits. The cascading caramel tresses deserve their own hashtag for the heavy lifting they do in the service of the show. And she can strut a stage with the feline finesse of a catwalk model and work that mic for emotional emphasis with the expertise of the natural born diva.

Gomez also has enough in the song bank to keep this audience of true believers happy and screaming at peak ear-pierce volume through most of the concert. They love to sing along and enthusiastically oblige the object of their fangirl affections whenever she invites them, which is often enough. For many of the thousands of Selenators in Sydney, this may have been their first concert and they loved seeing their idolette on stage. Yet in a year where the pop stage is owned by the Queen Bey, Gomez live in concert is a work in progress.
