Meghan Markle and Prince Harry pay undisclosed sum for Frogmore Cottage makeover

Royal accounts released this week show the couple have made an undisclosed contribution to paying off the rent and refurbishment for Frogmore Cottage, after £2.4 million of taxpayers money was used.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have paid an unknown upfront amount to pay for the rent and refurbishment of Frogmore Cottage.

The undisclosed sum appeared in royal accounts towards their UK home, reports Evening Standard.

Meghan and Harry stepped down senior members of the royal family and moved the US earlier this year, leaving their Windsor property.

The couple faced a backlash after spending £2.4 million of taxpayers money to renovate the home.

However, it was reported earlier this month the sum has been paid back after their controversial deal with Netflix.

A royal source claimed Prince Harry may have paid back the millions used to renovate Frogmore Cottage after getting “irritated” by the response to his Netflix deal.

A senior palace source said: “The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have made a substantial contribution to the Sovereign Grant that covers refurbishment and rental obligations for Frogmore Cottage.

“The reporting method for this contribution has yet to be determined and will have to be agreed by the National Audit Office before appearing in next year’s accounts.”

This comes as the royal accounts were released, which also highlighted the Queen faces a £35 million shortfall due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who relocated to North America for more privacy, have recently signed a mega deal with Netflix to produce documentaries and shows with the worldwide platform.

The multi-year production, reported to be worth £112 million, has helped them to repay taxpayer’s money for Frogmore Cottage.

Royal commentator Omid Scobie said in a podcast, The HeirPod, that the royal couple want to show that they are “independent” from the royal family.

It has also been claimed by a royal commentator, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, have shown their willingness to “keep the door shut” after paying off £2.4 million they spent renovating their Windsor home.
