Prince William Breaks Royal Family’s Silence with Rare Personal Statement: ‘I Share the Concern’

The Duke of Cambridge, who is president of the English Football Association, has backed “concerns” with the formation of a European Super League (ESL).

According to the details, Prince William has spoken out against proposals for a new sports tournament, which would permanently change football culture in Europe.

Yesterday, the Duke of Cambridge, 38, released an official statement on the Twitter account he shares with his wife, Kate Middleton.

The tweet read, “Now, more than ever, we must protect the entire football community–from the top level to the grassroots–and the values of competition and fairness at its core. I share the concerns of fans about the proposed Super League and the damage it risks causing to the game we love.” He even signed it with a personalized “W.”

The Duke of Cambridge voiced his thoughts on the controversial European Super League, which has been met with widespread criticism from both players and supporters.

The clubs – who are among the world’s biggest and more prestigious – have decided to break away from the UEFA-sanctioned Champions League and start their new competition “as soon as possible”, with plans for three more founding members to join and for five other clubs to be invited annually.

Sunday night saw the Premier League’s so-called ‘big six’ of Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham confirmed as founding members of a rival to the Champions League.

William’s intervention comes as the royal family continues to mourn the death of his grandfather Prince Philip, whose funeral was held on Saturday.

Philip was himself president of the governing body of English football between 1955 and 1957. William, who alongside his son George is a passionate Aston Villa fan, first took up the role in 2006.
