The 6 Trends That Dominated the Streets at NYFW

Another New York Fashion Week is in the books. And while the outfits on the runways are undoubtedly gorgeous, they’re not exactly the most wearable.

Much more our speed are the ensembles worn by showgoers milling around outside the venues.

Here, six trends that have been dominating the streets, along with how to wear them in your everyday life.

NEON

Designers like Prabal Gurung and Christian Siriano have been sending full neon looks down the runway this season, which is fun, but…a lot. If you’re wary of jumping aboard the fluorescent train, copy the outfit above and add a little peek of neon (via a slim-fit turtleneck, for example) to an otherwise straightforward jeans-and-blazer combination.

LEOPARD

Animal print—leopard, in particular—has been a mainstay on the runways, so it makes sense that we’re now seeing it out in the wild, too. Pro tip: Think of leopard as a neutral and pair it with pieces you’d ordinarily wear with black or navy. The beauty of this trend is that you can go as big (head-to-toe animal print) or small (printed bags or shoes) as you’re comfortable with.

COWBOY BOOTS

No offense to ankle boots or over-the-knee styles, but Western- and cowboy-inspired footwear is where it’s at—at least outside the shows we’ve been attending all week. Take a cue from the stylish gal above and wear yours with a feminine frock to create a cool dressed up/dressed down contrast.

BEADED BAGS

There are plenty of ‘90s fashion trends we’d rather not revisit, but one we’re happy to reconsider is beaded handbags. Interestingly, this resurgence is largely due to Instagram, though trendsetters have been carrying theirs to NYFW shows with abandon. The key here is to lean into the fun and go big or go home, color-wise. This isn’t the time to try to blend in.

WIDE BELTS

Skinny belts will never be out, but waist-defining options are back, baby. We spotted this look on the runway at Zimmerman, and we’re wearing ours off the runway with dark floral print dresses and block heels.

OVERSIZE BLAZERS

Blazers are a staple—on runways and in real life—but this season’s iteration is oversized and effortless. As seen outside of a recent show above, this type of jacket looks amazing atop a knit midi dress (but we’d also pair it with simple jeans and a tee).
