Katy Perry, Rihanna and Kylie Jenner are just a few of the celebs who have tried out the coloured hair trend but are you daring enough to get on board with the look? Whilst it may be a difficult beauty trend to pull off it can look bold and beautiful if done right. We have some expert beauty tips from the people at Hairtrade .com to help you wear coloured hair.

Clip in hair extensions

For those of you who want to try the coloured hair trend but do not want to take the plunge and dye your hair, try clip in hair extensions. Hair extensions come in a variety of different colours, are easy to use and come with the added bonus that you can simply unclip them and take them out if you change your mind. Adding single strands to your hair is great for creating flicks of colour and there’s no reason why you have to stick to one colour you could clip in as many as you wanted.

Temporary colour

More daring than clip in hair but less daunting than permanent dye, temporary hair colour is a great idea if you want to give it a go for a few weeks. Temporary hair dye usually lasts between three and six weeks depending on how often you wash it. To get the most out of the colour, apply the dye to light hair. If you have dark hair book a hair appointment to bleach the areas of the hair that you would like to be coloured. If you are applying the colour to small sections of your hair, use foil to stop it from going on unwanted areas and from making a mess.

Pastel shades

Pastel colours, like lilac and pink, work well on blondes and can look good all over hair. Kelly Osborne’s look works so well because the colour is so subtle and suits her skin colouring.

Bright colours

Bold brights work well on darker hair and can be pulled off by adding the colour to the ends of your hair or by having a few sections blended in underneath. Look at Katy Perry, Kylie Jenner, Jessie J and Lily Allen’s for inspiration.

Hair masque

Colouring your hair can cause damage so make sure you keep it in good condition by using a hair masque. Applying a moisturising hair masque to your hair once a week will bring life back to colour treated hair, leaving it shiny and replenished. Hair masques usually need to be left in your hair for around ten minutes so make sure you allow yourself enough time for the best results.

Colour hair products

To maintain your colourful locks make sure you use a shampoo and conditioner designed for coloured hair. This will help the colour last longer by preventing it from fading as well as adding shine and protection to your natural hair.

Simple makeup

Once you’ve picked the shade and put on the colour, think about your make-up and whether it will match your new locks. Balance out bold, coloured hair with simple make-up. Keep the colours on your face to a minimum by avoiding eye shadows and bright coloured lipstick and blushers. Try a nude lipstick and keep eyes low-key with just a flick of mascara.
