Prince William has prepared to be king his entire life but his outdated training won’t serve him — or the monarchy — when he takes the throne

Prince William has taken a significant step closer to the British throne, a role for which he has been preparing his entire life. However, his training, which has been overseen by his two teachers, King Charles III and the late Queen Elizabeth II, may be out of date by the time he reaches the throne.

The world has undergone significant sociological and cultural changes since Queen Elizabeth’s coronation in 1953, and society has seen enormous progress in civil rights, gender equality, and LGBTQ rights. Moreover, 17 countries removed their monarchies and become republics during the late Queen’s reign, according to the Express.

People reported. Royal experts believe that Charles, who is now 74, knows his time is shorter and sees himself as a caretaker of the throne for William. Public support for the monarchy is at an all-time low, with only 55% of the British people surveyed believing it is important for Britain to continue to have a monarchy.

Therefore, the task of ensuring the monarchy’s survival and success in the 21st century rests heavily on William’s shoulders, and experts say he will need to keep up with the changing times. Princess Diana did her best to shield William from the fact that he would one day be king during his childhood. He became fully aware of his future through regular mentorship with the Queen as a teenager, and the gravity of his future became crystal clear as he entered adulthood,  The Daily Mail reported in 2008.

After completing a two-year intensive training course, William made strides to fulfill the traditional expectations of a monarch, such as marrying Kate Middleton in 2011 and having three children, ensuring there would be a future heir (and spares). He also showed a willingness to take on more royal duties, sometimes at the cost of his own personal ambition.

As Harper’s Bazaar reported, William has made several missteps under the mounting responsibilities he is shouldering, such as his and Kate’s disastrous royal tour of the Caribbean in 2022, which was intended to celebrate Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee. The couple faced backlash after photos of them greeting children through holes in a wire fence in Jamaica were released, and stops on the tour were canceled due to protests demanding reparations for slavery.

William also faced criticism after condemning “racist abuse” towards British players while not taking a stand against racism when it came to his own family. He also faced cheating rumors when British tabloids speculated about a fallout between him and Kate and their friend and neighbor, Rose Hanbury, the Marchioness of Cholmondeley, although nothing substantiated ever arose,  Gawker reported.

As William takes on even more royal duties following Charles’s coronation, he will face even greater scrutiny and pressure to navigate the changing times and ensure the monarchy’s survival and success  The Cut reported at the time.
