Formerly conjoined twin girls back at home months after 11-hour surgery in North Texas

After an 11-hour treatment to separate them, two twins who were once conjoined are now at home. The Cook Children’s Hospital Center in Fort Worth said on Wednesday that AmieLynn Finley had returned home with her sister JamieLynn.

According to a narrative the hospital posted on its website, JamieLynn was discharged from the hospital on March 21 while AmieLynn needed to remain in the Cook Children’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit for a longer recuperation.

While she had to “recover after a recent operation to repair her chest incision and make more space for her heart, diaphragm, and lungs,” doctors stated AmieLynn’s rehabilitation “has been more difficult.” The hospital released AmieLynn on Friday.

“There is definitely a weight lifted,” remarked mother Amanda Arciniega. It’s a lot of emotions, and I’m delighted and eager. There is still plenty to do.

The girls will still need to undergo therapy, according to the hospital. The first conjoined twins to be split at the hospital underwent separation surgery in January at the age of 4 months.

They were omphalopagus twins because their abdomens were connected and they had the same liver. Each of them has a unique heart and heart sac.

Despite their worries, Arciniega had a straightforward pregnancy, but she delivered delivery early when their doctor observed that they were growing slowly.

On October 3 at Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Fort Worth, they were delivered via C-section. 4 pounds, 7.8 ounces was their combined weight.

Dr. Bannie Tabor remarked, “We made it appear easy, but it wasn’t an easy birth. They are extremely unique, according to the hospital, as conjoined twins are only born together around 1 in 200,000 times.

They were moved from Texas Health Fort Worth to Cook Children’s NICU after spending a month there. The hospital claimed that because they were not growing at the same rate, doctors chose a sooner-than-later surgical date.

At the age of 16 weeks, they were divided. According to the hospital, the surgery required months of planning, investigation, preparation, and practice. Their treatment and surgery were performed by at least 100 medical professionals.

As the medical director of pediatric surgery at Cook Children, Dr. Jose Iglesias remarked, “I think the teamwork is a tremendous issue to bring up because it’s everything.” With the unknowns we’ll face, it takes a sizable crew to have everything running as smoothly as you can. Teamwork is having everyone communicate honestly and openly with one another, regardless of their positions.
